6 Tips to Protect Yourself Against Crime

Published on

Crime is a word with broad meanings. It can cover everything from someone snatching a purse and running away to the much more deadly act of someone shooting another person in cold blood. Both are unpleasant, but one is deadly. Past victims of crime often wonder what made them a target, a victim. Was it circumstance? Being in a bad location? Did something about your behavior contribute to you becoming a victim of crime? Despite some instances of crime being unavoidable, there are more than a few ways to make sure that you don’t become a part of crime statistics.

6 Tips to Protect Yourself Against Crime

1. Home security systems

Perhaps the best way to protect your home and family against crime is to install a home security system that includes surveillance cameras from AUS Security Cameras. When burglars and other criminals see a security system with a camera, they often think twice about robbing or breaking in for other evil reasons. Even if they do manage to get in, a security system will alert authorities and give you your best chance to get help before it’s too late.

2. Lock windows

Violent crime is the most shocking kind of crime. Most of us couldn’t imagine inflicting any type of physical harm on another human being. Unfortunately there are people in the world who are not only capable of this, but enjoy it. Burglars and physically violent people often get into homes through windows. Always double check and make sure all household windows are locked.

3. Informing family when taking a vacation

If you’re taking a vacation, it’s wise to pick a select person or group of people who can keep an eye on your house while you’re gone. If anything is amiss, they can alert you and the authorities can take over. One great thing about a home security system is that the entire time you’re gone, you already have a “friend” watching the house who can tell the authorities if someone comes onto your property without authorization.

4. Avoid giving out personal information over the phone

Identity theft and theft of your money is a huge part of cybercrime these days. If you want to make sure that things are on the up and up, remember to never give out your bank account information to a stranger over the phone. Businesses these days don’t need to know your bank account number over the phone. They might ask for the last four digits, but they will never ask for things like a bank account number out of the blue. If you believe a reputable business is asking for this, double check the number and be sure it’s that company asking for it by calling them directly yourself with their official number, not the one that called you.

5. Protect passwords

Today password systems are getting even smarter. Two-factor authentication and verifying directly through your phone number are important parts of protecting passwords. Businesses often ask you to change passwords often now. If you suspect anyone has used your password or see signs of a breach, make sure to change your password immediately.

6. Self defense classes

Violent crime is one of the scariest crimes, and it never hurts to have a few self defense classes under your belt just in case the worst case scenario happens. While you never ever want to be in a situation like this, there are some cases where self defense classes can teach you maneuvers that may someday save your life. Even if the situation never arises, it can instill a sense of confidence in you when you’re in areas that are high crime.

No one wants to be a victim of any type of crime, especially violent crime that so often can turn deadly. Protecting your home is as simple as having a home security system with cameras installed. Protecting your bank accounts and financial information is a little trickier. Finally, self defense classes can give you a greater sense of confidence when you’re in areas where the crime rate is high. You never know when that extra bit of effort might pay off and save your life.
