This exam is conducted by the Science Olympiad foundation which is a non-profit organization in New Delhi. Olympiad is meant to test the academic knowledge of the student. This exam is a kind of competitive exam that takes place at the school level. The motto is to promote subjects like Maths, Science, English, General knowledge and Computer Science subjects to school kids. This exam is conducted for students who are in Class 1 till Class 12.

What is the Olympiad Examination

What are the types of Olympiad examinations?

Science Olympiad Foundation conducts six Olympiads in total. They are,

  • National Science Olympiad (NSO)
  • National Cyber Olympiad (NCO)
  • International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO)
  • International General Knowledge Olympiad (IGKO)
  • International English Olympiad (IEO)
  • International Company Secretaries Olympiad (ICSO)

National Science Olympiad conducts examination

For Class 1 till Class 10. The paper pattern will be

  • Logical reasoning (Section 1)
  • Science (Section 2)
  • Achievers’ section (Section 3)

For Class 11 & 12, the pattern will be,

  • Physics, Chemistry (Section 1)
  • Achievers’ section (Section 2)
  • Mathematics, Biology.

National Cyber Olympiad (NCO) conducts exams for Class 1 – 12. The pattern is,

  • Logical reasoning (Section 1)
  • Computers and IT (Section 2)
  • Achievers’ section (Section 3)

International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) conducts exams for class 1 till class 12, the pattern will be,

  • Logical reasoning (Section 1)
  • Mathematical reasoning (Section 2)
  • Everyday Mathematics (Section 3)
  • Achievers’ section. (Section 4)

International General Knowledge Olympiad (IGKO). This Olympiad conducts examinations for class 1 till the 12th. Here is the pattern,

  • General Awareness (Section 1)
  • Current affairs (Section 2)
  • Life skills (Section 3)
  • Achievers’ section. (Section 4)

International English Olympiad conducts exams for class 1 till class 12. The pattern for the same is,

  • Word and structure knowledge (Section 1)
  • Reading (Section 2)
  • Spoken and written expressions (Section 3)
  • Achievers’ section. (Section 4)

International Company Secretaries Olympiad (ICSO) conducts examinations for Class 11 and Class 12th. The pattern will be,

  • Quantitative analysis reasoning
  • Economics
  • Business studies
  • Accountancy
  • Achievers’ section.

What does IMO teach?

Logical reasoning:-

Mathematical reasoning:-

This section aims to test the skill of mathematical knowledge among all the students of Olympiads. The students can judge their conceptual understanding which in turn helps them to understand the concepts better.

Everyday Mathematics:-

This section aims for the students to improve their thinking ability with the questions revolving around general management.

Achievers’ Section:-

This section will be challenging because this section tests the students with questions that develop their level of advancement and higher-order thinking skills.

How to apply for the Olympiad examination?

The conducting authority of the exam is Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF). This sends registration forms for Olympiads along with the prospectus of the schools. Hence, the interested candidates can collect and fill those forms respective to their school authority.

  • If the school hasn’t registered with SOF you can also register by requesting the forms and prospectus directing them to register by sending a mail at [email protected]. Students can fill the forms as per the requirements and submit them to the school coordinator.
  • The coordinator shall generate the roll number of the student who applied for the Olympiad as per the guidelines mentioned in the prospectus.
  • The student must submit their filled registration forms with their roll numbers written before the deadline.
  • Then, the SOF dispatches the question paper for the required Olympiad examination to the already registered students by the school authorities.
  • The fee paid should be INR 125 that including GST. This fee applies to Indian students. Whereas for international students, the registration fee will be USD 9.

How to prepare for the Olympiad examination?

As the information provided above, the Olympiad examination and preparation will not be an extra burden to the candidates. The Olympiad examination not only provides those extra benefits but also every student has the benefit that; the Olympiad exams are managed and controlled by the school curriculum.

Students should study the books that are mentioned in their school curriculum. For example, the portions that the student should be completing will be NCERT books when it comes to the CBSE syllabus. Most importantly, there is no additional reference books are needed for the examinations.

Most essential thing is that the student should have a very clear conceptual knowledge about every subject they undertake and they should build a strong foundation with the subject very well. This will help them to answer the questions most easily.

Lastly, the exam pattern and questions will be very much different when compared with regular school exams. Moreover, the syllabus will be similar to that of the school curriculum. But in Olympiads, the questions will be quite thicker and critical. Hence, the students should possess a clear thought process to solve the problems\answers. They should be strong in logical reasoning and aptitude.
