What is a meta description?

When you type a key phrase into Google (e.g., SEO Los Angeles), you will be provided with a long list of links. Underneath each link is a small body of text describing what can be found within. That body of text is called a meta description.

With that in mind; here’s how to write metas that pop!

1. Answer their queries clearly

More often than not, users are on Google looking for an answer to their question. Your job is to anticipate the intent behind your focus keywords and provide an appropriate response when choosing your blog topics.

For example, (and it’s a bad example):

  • Search query: “What is a meta description?”
  • Your meta: “This body of text right here is called a meta description. Follow the link and we’ll teach you how to write similarly awesome meta for your web pages!”

As you can see, the meta description clearly answers the question while hinting at some additional information and value to be found on the web page within.

2. Keep is short and sweet

What action do you want your prospective customers to take? How can they benefit from clicking on your link and visiting your website?

The more compelling the CTA, the far more likely those users will be to choose your website over your fellow competitors.

Couple that with a thorough understanding of keyword intent, a well-placed focus keyword, and a beautifully written piece of copy within the 150-160-character mark and you’ll have no trouble converting those clicks into customers!
