Increasingly well established companies are finding it difficult to compete with entrepreneurs, startups who are offering innovative products and services. The employees of these reputed companies are only doing the work assigned to them, they are not willing to take any kind of risk. One way companies can overcome this problem is by hiring intrepreneurs, internal entrepreneurs. Since this is a comparatively new term, many companies ask who are intrepreneurs?
Definition
An intrepreneur is an internal entrepreneur who is either a person who is hired to work as an entrepreneur within the organization to make the major changes which could help the business grow faster. In almost all organizations, the employees are expected to do the work assigned to them within the specified time period and they are paid a salary usually every month. The employees do not want to take any risk, because if they fail, the business may face a loss. Hence businesses who wish to make radical changes will usually hire an intrepreneur, who will look at the business with a fresh perspective.
The intrepreneur is usually hired as a freelancer or contractor for a specified time period depending on the extent of the changes or innovation required. In a few cases, existing employees who innovate can also work as intrepreneurs within the company. The intrepreneur is usually an experienced professional, who is well networked and is aware of the best practices, industry trends. He is usually a person with an open mind, willing to look at things from a different perspective. He should also be willing to be honest, give the business owner or management feedback which may not always be positive.
Identify problems
One of the main problems faced in organizations is that employees and management find it difficult to identify what is wrong in the system, which could affect the growth of business, productivity of the employees. Many of the employees have been working in the organization for many years, they do not want to upset the status quo. Hence it is necessary to have an intrepreneur who is not part of the system, to identify some of major problems in the organization, like employees wasting business resources for personal gain or hatred, lack of accountability, and no grievance redressal mechanism.
Employee feedback
Many employees are not happy with certain aspects of their job, which could adversely affect their productivity and also the profit, growth of the organization. However, these employees are not willing to complain to their manager or the business owner, since they do not want to create a negative impression, which could adversely affect their increment, salary and career growth. This problem is more severe in some of the top companies, since they pay very high salaries. Since the intrepreneur is not a full time employee, he can collect the honest feedback from the employees after interacting with them, and provide this information to the business owner, who can make necessary changes if required.
