Common Skin Changes During Pregnancy

Published on

Pregnancy is one of the most thrilling stages in a woman’s life. But it is also one of the most challenging times in their life. During this stage, you will notice plenty of changes in your skin. The sudden spike in female hormones in your body brings most of these changes. It can cause discolouration, stretch marks, and blemishes in your belly and other visible areas of the skin. Fortunately, you may apply pregnancy belly oil and other treatments that could reduce pregnancy skin problems.

Common Skin Changes During Pregnancy

Here are some of the most prevalent pregnancy skin problems that you may encounter during this exciting stage in your life and how to fix them in the safest and most gentle way possible.

Stretch Marks

The unsightly marks common in most pregnant women are often called stretch marks. Also known as striae distensae or striae gravidarum, these long indented streaks often have a reddish or purplish appearance. It is often present in a pregnant woman’s belly, hips, chest, thighs, and bottom.

Stretch marks normally appear during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy since the skin had to stretch significantly at these points to accommodate the growing belly. While this skin blemish is irreversible, you may prevent it from occurring or reduce its appearance by applying good pregnancy belly oil all over the tummy.

Pigmentation

Plenty of pregnant women deal with darkened spots in the body, particularly around the nipples, inner thighs, neck, and genital areas. There is also a long visible black line in the tummy called the linea nigra. Meanwhile, some pregnant women also deal with dark patches on the face called chloasma.

To avoid this, you must limit your sun exposure. Since these pigmentations are usually pregnancy-related, they normally go away on their own after giving birth.

Varicose Veins

Pregnant women may also develop swollen veins in the legs because of the pressure from the uterus. It may also appear due to the rapid hormonal changes in the body.

While varicose veins look dangerous and painful, it may significantly improve without any medical interventions after the birth of your baby.

Acne

Some women deal with acne breakouts during pregnancy. This skin problem is also caused by the surge of progesterone and estrogen in your body.

Also, the oil glands are often more active during this stage in your life. While it may be hard to prevent acne’s appearance during pregnancy, you may stop it from getting worse by washing your face with a gentle, pregnant-friendly cleanser. It is also necessary to avoid picking blemishes and stop yourself from touching the affected skin often.

Skin Rashes

It is common for pregnant women to have itchy skin because of the disrupted bile transportation to the liver. It causes the bile’s distribution to the other areas of the body.

As a result, it will make the skin feel itchy. It can also boost the possibility of other skin diseases like psoriasis, eczema, and candida infection.

These are just some of the skin conditions that may emerge during your pregnancy. Fortunately, all of these will go away once you deliver your little one. You need to ensure that you will take care of your body properly to save yourself from permanent damages that may go past the crucial stage of your life.
