Feeling awkward could be a blessing or a curse. It all boils down to what you make of it. A wise man once said, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.”
It’s hard not to feel a little awkward if you’re the shortest in the crowd. It’s so hard when you’re trying hard to fit into a particular circle, pretending to be what you’re not just to gain acceptance.
Yes. I know. I have been there, but you know what? If you’re different, you’re blessed.
You’re not supposed to be in the crowd. You’re supposed to stand out! You’re not supposed to conform to society; you’re supposed to be unique, be free and be you!!!
Realization of this and actually putting efforts into being unapologetically YOU is what we know as self-esteem. Self-esteem quotes can help you do that.
Self-esteem is simply self-love.
An individual with high self-esteem always loves others no more than they love themselves, believes in their abilities and understand that there is no limit to what they can achieve. Individuals with low self-esteem, on the other hand, are often doubtful of themselves and insecure. They often, feel unmotivated and unloved.
Self-esteem has to do with
- Total self-acceptance and self-love no matter one’s flaws
- Total belief and confidence in one’s abilities
Because of the billions of people battling with low self-esteem worldwide, a lot of experts, both psychological and social experts have come up with different means of helping sufferers escape this plague. Therapy is a good means of overcoming this problem as well as paying attention to some of the quotes from books of great men and women who have suffered this problem and overcame it.
To get to somewhere, seek directions and from someone who knows their way around. The quotes from these individuals are directions for people with self-doubt or low self-esteem.
Total Self -Acceptance and Self- Love
Sometimes, you might feel terrible because of your physical appearance or what people think about you. Understanding that you must accept yourself completely for who you are and not what others want is a great way of telling yourself “I love you.”
According to the great American writer, Mark Twain,
#1 “The worst loneliness is to be uncomfortable with yourself.”
It means that no matter how much you pretend to be someone else or something else just to keep getting a particular result, you’ll always end up being lonely the moment you get back to your real self.
Another quote from August Wilson reads;
#2 “Confront the dark parts of yourself, and work to banish them with illumination and forgiveness. Your willingness to wrestle with your demons will cause your angels to sing.”
To buttress our point let us see another quote from the poet, Dorothy Parker. In one of her poems, she expressed how she once suffered low self-esteem and how she had grown to love herself. Confidence has to do with you. It is when you make yourself the core of your universe.
#3 “In youth, it was a way I had, to do my best to please. And change, with every passing lad to suit his theories. But now I know the things I know and do the things I do, and if you do not like me so, to hell, my love, with you.
One of the most beautiful quotes on self-love that you will ever find is one by the American-Canadian actor and film producer Michael J. Fox and it reads thus:
#4 “One’s dignity may be assaulted, vandalized and cruelly mocked, but it can never be taken away unless it is surrendered.”
Total Belief in Yourself and Abilities
Lyanla Vanzant, an American inspirational speaker (amongst other titles) had a turbulent childhood and early life. She was raped by a relative at age 9 and later got into an abusive marriage.
She left the marriage and her three kids. These events alone are enough to kill the motivation to become anything from anyone. It’s so easy to stop believing in oneself and settle for less once the immediate environment becomes stormy but Vanzant never gave up.
Lyanla is more of a title given to her which is from Yoruba language and translates to ‘great mother.’ It was a title given after she got ordination as a high priestess in the local tradition.
She has a word on self-belief.
#5 “Everything that happens to you is a reflection of what you believe about yourself. We cannot outperform our level of self-esteem. We cannot draw to ourselves more than we think we are worth.”
There’s more and this time Dr. Roopleen, an author and counselor said,
#6 “If you have a dream, don’t just sit there. Gather courage to believe that you can succeed and leave no stone unturned to make it a reality.”
In another famous quote of hers, she said:
If you do not believe in yourself and what you stand for, you will often feel swayed and unmotivated. Without motivation, no one can achieve anything because every achievement is on the other side of hard work.
Norman Vincent Peale, an American author who wrote the popular book ‘the power of positive thinking’ talked about self-esteem in relation to self-belief in one of his books. He said,
#7 “Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers, you cannot be successful or happy.”
There are a lot of factors that trigger self-esteem in individuals. Once you can identify the ones that positively enhance your self-esteem, you should stick to them.
