Do the thickness of the mattress impact comfort?

The common myth among most shoppers is that the thicker the mattress the more comfortable it is. Contrary to this more thickness does not mean comfort. Typically, the higher the density better the quality and is harder, firmer and more durable. Whereas a low-density memory foam offers less support and is softer.

The thickness generally changes with the number of layers that are present in the mattress while density is defined by the solidity when these layers are put together. It is best to choose a memory foam mattress that has a density rating of more than 3 pounds per m3 of foam layer as anything below it will not give enough support to the body. Factors that determine the mattress thickness

Bodyweight: The body type of sleeper is one of the determining factors in finding the perfect thickness. A thicker mattress is a better option for couples while a single sleeper who is petite can sleep well on the thin mattress too. Then there are the transitional layers usually made of polyurethane foam and then there are the top layers also called as the comfort layers which vary. Thicker mattresses usually will have extra comfort layers or quilted cover to provide more comfort.

Sleeping position:

  • Back sleepers should opt for less thickness and medium-firm mattress to get proper support. A memory foam layer thickness of around 3 to 5 cm is sufficient for this type of sleepers.
  • Stomach sleepers: A firm mattress is essential for such sleepers to reduce strain on the lower back and also to maintain a neutral spine. A thickness of 5 to 7 cm is ideal for stomach sleepers.
  • Side sleepers: There is more pressure on the shoulders and hips hence thick mattress with extra cushioning helps in alleviating tension from pressure points. A layer over 7cm is ideal for them.
